Why POS Terminals Need Reliable Battery Backup
POS machines across Indian retail, hospitality, and logistics run on the assumption that power is always available — but grid instability, especially in tier-2/3 cities and during monsoon season, makes that assumption risky. A terminal that loses power mid-transaction can corrupt a sale, lose connection to the payment gateway, or simply frustrate the customer at checkout. Battery backup isn't a luxury feature; for high-transaction-volume retailers, it's operational insurance.
What to Look for in a POS Backup Battery
- Sufficient runtime under load: Card readers, thermal printers, and displays draw current simultaneously — size the pack for combined peak draw, not just standby current.
- Voltage stability: POS boards are sensitive to voltage sag; a pack that droops under load can cause printer faults or card-reader errors even before it's "empty."
- Compact, integrable form factor: Most POS enclosures have limited internal space — the battery needs to fit without redesigning the housing.
- Built-in BMS protection: Overcharge, over-discharge, and short-circuit protection are essential for a device that charges and discharges daily, often left plugged in continuously.
- Cycle life for daily charge/discharge: A POS terminal effectively charges every night and discharges during the day — over a 3–5 year deployment that's 1,000+ cycles, which favors LiFePO4 over standard Li-ion.

Estimating Your Backup Runtime Requirement
Most Indian retail environments need 15–30 minutes of backup runtime to cover the typical duration of a local outage or generator switchover — not hours. Oversizing the battery for "all-day" backup usually isn't necessary and adds unnecessary cost; right-sizing for realistic outage windows keeps the BOM cost down while still solving the actual problem.
