What an IoT Battery Specification Actually Has to Pin Down
Most enquiries we receive specify capacity and voltage and stop there. For iot & smart devices the parameters below decide whether the pack survives its intended service life, and they are the ones worth agreeing before a purchase order.

| Self-discharge rate | <2% per month at 25°C | A device that transmits once a day spends 99.9% of its life idle. Self-discharge, not transmission current, is what sets calendar life on a long-standby node. |
| Quiescent BMS drain | <10µA in sleep | A BMS drawing 100µA flattens a small pack in under a year on its own. This is the single most common reason a "5-year" IoT battery lasts eighteen months. |
| Pulse discharge capability | 2–5A bursts from a sub-1Ah pack | GSM and NB-IoT modems draw hard, short current spikes on transmit. A cell sized on average current will brown out the modem mid-handshake. |

Three Mistakes We See Repeatedly
These come up often enough in iot & smart devices projects that they are worth stating plainly. None of them are exotic; all of them are expensive to discover after tooling is committed.
Sizing on average current
Datasheet capacity divided by average draw gives a runtime figure that ignores transmit spikes and cold-temperature derating. Real deployments come in 30–40% below that estimate.
Ignoring shelf time
Devices sit in a warehouse and then in a distribution channel. A pack shipped at 100% state of charge and stored warm for eight months arrives already aged. Ship at storage charge.
No field-replacement plan
A soldered pack in a sealed enclosure means the whole device is scrapped when the battery dies. That is a warranty cost and, under EPR, a waste-handling obligation.
