What a Telecom Backup Battery Specification Has to Pin Down

Most enquiries we receive specify capacity and voltage and stop there. For telecom & networking the parameters below decide whether the pack survives its intended service life, and they are the ones worth agreeing before a purchase order.

Three Mistakes We See Repeatedly

These come up often enough in telecom & networking projects that they are worth stating plainly. None of them are exotic; all of them are expensive to discover after tooling is committed.

Direct lead-acid substitution

Voltage windows, charge profiles and low-voltage disconnect points all differ. A drop-in swap without reconfiguring the rectifier and the controller shortens pack life dramatically.

Sizing to nameplate load

Measure the actual site draw over a week. Nameplate figures are consistently conservative in one direction and optimistic in another.

No thermal plan

A lithium retrofit that solves the weight problem but ignores cabinet temperature simply moves the failure from year eight to year three.

Yes. Most fixed telecom plant in India runs on a nominal -48V DC bus, and a LiFePO4 string for that bus is typically 15S or 16S depending on the rectifier's float and low-voltage-disconnect settings. Those two numbers matter more than capacity, because a string sized without checking them will either never reach full charge or will disconnect early. Send us the rectifier make and its configured voltage window and we will size the string against it.

Higher purchase price, lower cost per year in most Indian deployments — but the gap depends almost entirely on cabinet temperature. VRLA loses roughly half its calendar life for every 10°C above 25°C, and a great many Indian cabinets sit well above that for months. Where a site is air-conditioned and cycles rarely, VRLA can still be the rational choice. We would rather tell you that than sell you a pack you do not need.

Scale and duty cycle, and they are not interchangeable. A router UPS is a small pack keeping a single ONT or access point alive through a household outage — usually a few hours at a few watts. Site backup carries an entire cabinet of radios and cards, is sized in hours at hundreds of watts, and has to integrate with the rectifier and report health to the NOC. We build both, but they are separate designs.
