List of Lithium Battery Manufacturers in India (2026) — Cell Makers vs Pack Makers

Last updated: · Written by the Leolus Energy engineering team, Bangalore. Status checked against public reporting as of October 2026.

Read time: 8 min · Who this is for: procurement teams, OEMs and EPCs shortlisting a lithium battery supplier in India

The short version: India has two very different kinds of lithium battery manufacturer. A handful of companies make cells — Ola Electric and TDSG are producing, Amara Raja and Exide Energy Solutions are ramping up, and Tata’s Agratas and Reliance are building. Most of the rest make battery packs: they take cells, add a BMS, enclosure and testing, and engineer the pack for a specific product. Which kind you need depends on whether you are buying a component or a finished, application-specific battery.
Disclosure: Leolus Energy is a lithium battery pack manufacturer and appears in this list. We have kept our own entry factual and listed other companies on public information only. No company paid to be included. If a status below has changed, write to us and we will correct it.

Why “lithium battery manufacturer” means two different things

A lithium battery has two layers. The cell is the electrochemical unit: cathode, anode, separator and electrolyte in a cylindrical, prismatic or pouch can. The pack is what a product actually uses: cells connected in series and parallel, a battery management system (BMS), wiring, a connector, an enclosure, and the test and safety work around them.

Cell manufacturing is a gigafactory business measured in gigawatt-hours. Pack manufacturing is an engineering business measured in how well the pack suits its application — a drone that pulls 150A on take-off, a weighing scale that needs a flat voltage, a telecom site that cycles daily. Most lists of “top lithium battery manufacturers in India” mix the two together, which is why they are hard to use for sourcing.

Lithium-ion cell manufacturers in India

Status is as publicly reported in October 2026. Capacity announcements are not the same as production, so we have separated the two.

CompanyLocationCell status (Oct 2026)Who it supplies
Ola ElectricKrishnagiri, Tamil NaduProducing cells at its own gigafactory; capacity reported around 1 GWh in 2025Mainly captive — its own electric scooters
TDSG (Toshiba, Denso, Suzuki JV)Hansalpur, GujaratProducing automotive cellsCaptive — Suzuki / Maruti Suzuki vehicles
Amara RajaTelanganaCustomer-qualification cell plant commissioned July 2026; first commercial cell line scheduled for 2027Automotive and energy storage customers (qualification stage)
Exide Energy Solutions (Exide Industries)Bengaluru, KarnatakaFirst phase of a multi-GWh plant being brought up; check current output before planning on itAutomotive and energy storage
Agratas (Tata Group)Sanand, GujaratUnder construction; first process equipment arrived September 2026Planned: Tata group vehicles and external customers
Reliance New EnergyJamnagar, GujaratAwarded capacity under the ACC PLI scheme; production not yet reportedPlanned

What this means for a buyer: in 2026 almost every lithium battery pack sold in India — including ours — is built on imported cells, mostly from China. Domestic cells are still largely captive to the vehicle makers that produce them. That is changing, but slowly: under the Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) PLI scheme, 40 GWh has been awarded to four companies, and government updates in early 2026 put installed capacity at a small fraction of that.

Lithium battery pack manufacturers in India, by application

Pack makers are best compared by the application they specialise in. A supplier that is excellent at EV traction packs may not be the right choice for a medical device or a drone.

CompanyBaseWhat they are known for
Amara Raja (pack operations)Tirupati, Andhra PradeshLithium packs for telecom backup, electric mobility and industrial use, alongside its Amaron lead-acid business
Nexcharge (Exide–Leclanché JV)GujaratLithium packs and systems for industrial storage and electric vehicles
Cygni EnergyHyderabad, TelanganaBattery energy storage systems (BESS)
Leolus EnergyElectronics City, BangaloreDrone and UAV battery packs (Nexfly semi-solid state, 4S–12S), ZERA LiFePO4 packs for solar, street lights and energy storage, and custom OEM packs for electronics, medical devices, POS, weighing machines and robotics. 10+ years in lithium packs; BIS CRS-registered manufacturing unit

There are also hundreds of smaller assemblers across India, especially for e-rickshaw, inverter and solar packs. Quality varies widely. The checklist below is how to tell them apart.

LFP (LiFePO4) battery manufacturers in India

LiFePO4 (LFP) is the chemistry of choice for solar, energy storage and anything that cycles daily, because it lasts longer and has a wider thermal safety margin than NMC. No Indian company was producing LFP cells at scale for the open market in October 2026; Indian LFP battery manufacturers build packs on imported LFP cells. When you compare LFP suppliers, compare cell grade and source, BMS quality and test data rather than the “manufacturer” label. See our LFP and OEM pack manufacturing and energy storage systems pages for how we specify ours.

How to check a lithium battery manufacturer before you order

  1. Ask whether they make cells or packs. If packs, ask which cell brand and grade they use, and whether that is fixed on your bill of materials.
  2. Verify the BIS registration number. Portable lithium cells and batteries fall under BIS’s Compulsory Registration Scheme. Ask for the R-number and check it on the BIS CRS portal. Check that it covers the model you are buying, not just the company.
  3. Ask for a test report on your pack — capacity, internal resistance, cell matching and BMS protection limits — not a generic brochure.
  4. See the BMS specification. Overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, short-circuit and temperature limits should be written down, along with the communication protocol if your device reads battery data.
  5. Visit or video-call the facility. A real pack manufacturer can show you cell sorting, spot welding, BMS fitting and end-of-line testing.
  6. Check after-sales and end of life. Warranty terms in writing, and a route for spent packs under India’s Battery Waste Management Rules (EPR explained).

FAQ — Lithium Battery Manufacturers in India

As of October 2026, Ola Electric (Krishnagiri) and TDSG (Hansalpur) are producing lithium-ion cells, mainly for their own vehicles. Amara Raja and Exide Energy Solutions are ramping up cell plants, and Tata's Agratas and Reliance are building gigafactories under the ACC PLI scheme.

Most do not. The large majority of Indian lithium battery manufacturers are pack manufacturers: they build battery packs on imported cells and add the BMS, enclosure, testing and application engineering. Domestic cell production is still small and largely captive to vehicle makers.

Ask the manufacturer for its BIS registration number (it starts with R-) and look it up on the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme portal. Check that the registration covers the standard and the model you are buying, not just the company name.

LFP battery packs are made in India by pack manufacturers such as Amara Raja, Nexcharge and Leolus Energy, among many others. In October 2026 the LFP cells inside them are still mostly imported, so compare suppliers on cell grade, BMS quality and test data.

Leolus Energy in Bangalore manufactures Nexfly semi-solid state drone battery packs from 4S to 12S for agriculture, surveillance, delivery and defence drones, and builds custom UAV packs with a matched BMS for drone OEMs.
